What it’s for
The gearbox at the head of a brushcutter — where the shaft meets the cutting attachment — relies on a thick grease, not oil, to keep its bevel gears turning smoothly. This grease is squeezed in through a fill plug or grease nipple on the gearbox housing, rather than poured or mixed like fuel. Over time the grease inside breaks down or gets forced out as the gears mesh, so most manufacturers recommend checking and topping up the gearbox every 20-25 hours of use, or roughly once a season for occasional users.
Skipping this is one of the more common ways owners shorten the life of their machine: a dry or worn gearbox runs hotter, wears the gear teeth faster, and can eventually seize or strip. It’s a cheap, five-minute job compared with replacing a gearbox head.
Choosing and fitting
Most straight-shaft and split-shaft brushcutters with an angle gearbox use a broadly similar bevel-gear arrangement, so this type of grease suits the vast majority of petrol models regardless of brand. Check your machine’s manual for the exact fill point location and quantity before topping up — some heads take only a small dab, others more, and overfilling can build unwanted pressure and force grease out through the seals.
This product won’t help with straight-shaft trimmers or cordless models that use a direct-drive head with no gearbox, and it’s not a substitute for the 2-stroke fuel mix or bar oil your machine also needs elsewhere. It’s a small, low-cost maintenance item rather than something that transforms performance — its value is in quietly preventing a much more expensive repair down the line.
