The idea is straightforward: plastic housings can crack or wear at the eyelets after a season or two of hitting fences, stones and tree roots, while an aluminium body shrugs off that kind of knock much better. You load line, wind it onto the internal spool, thread it through the eyelets, and bump the head on the ground to feed fresh line as you trim — the same mechanism as any standard tap-feed head, just in a sturdier shell.
Choosing and fitting it
