Engine and power: not a close contest

This isn’t a 20%-more-power situation like some Stihl sibling comparisons — it’s a genuinely different tier. The FS 55’s 27.2 cc 2-stroke engine is fine for grass but has no real reserve for anything tougher. The FS 131 runs Stihl’s 36.3 cc 4-MIX engine, a 4-stroke design that still uses 2-stroke fuel mix but delivers strong low-end torque with lower noise and cleaner exhaust than a pure 2-stroke of similar size. That torque is exactly what a metal blade needs to keep cutting through woody stems without stalling.

Blade capability: the real dividing line

The FS 55 is a line-head machine — it comes set up for grass trimming, with a lighter guard, and isn’t intended to run a metal blade. The FS 131 is built for blade work from the start, with the guard, handle and torque to support a 3-tooth or 4-tooth brambles blade, or an 8-tooth/circular-saw blade for saplings and woody growth.

Which should you buy?

For most gardens, the FS 55 is the right call — it’s light, affordable, reliable, and does exactly what a grass trimmer should. The FS 131 only makes sense if your land actually demands it: real brambles, scrub, or heavy clearing that a line-head trimmer simply can’t touch. Buying the FS 131 for a tidy lawn is overkill and unnecessary expense; buying the FS 55 for bramble-choked land will leave you frustrated and reaching for a blade it was never built to carry.
